The Neelsville Choral Music program consists of two groups: a general chorus and an advanced chorus.
The General Chorus
The general chorus is open to all students of all three grades as long as the class fits into their schedule. We learn basic choral technique: rudimentary sight reading, application of the elements of music (tempo, dynamics, et al), simple harmony (rounds and partner songs), as well as things like posture and proper vocal production. We perform twice a year towards the end of each semester.
The Advanced Chorus
The advanced chorus, also known as the contemporary choir, is open only to students in 7th and 8th grade who have performed in the general chorus for at least one year. We perform music that is currently on the radio, as well as music from the past. We always try to have a theme in mind when we perform. The themes for our last concert were hope and inspiration. We learn advanced choral technique: advanced sight reading emphasizing two part singing and movable “do”, application of the elements of music (tempo, dynamics, et al), and anatomy as it pertains to the voice. We perform twice a year towards the end of each semester.
Neelsville Bands
There are several levels of bands available for students to participate in at NMS. Our Advanced Band is comprised on the most experienced players, and usually is limited to 7th or 8th grade students who have been playing for 3-5 years. Our Concert Band is our middle experience group, comprised of 7th and 8th graders, with only 1-2 years of experience. Our 6th Grade Band is for incoming 6th grade students who played in elementary school, regardless of ability. Finally, our Beginning Band is designed for students in any grade who would like to start learning an instrument in middle school. It is never too late to start.
Neelsville Orchestra:
In addition to our band program, Neelsville has one Orchestra class for any students playing string instruments, regardless of experience level.
