Global Context
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Global Context is a foundational element within the curriculum framework of IB programs. It serves as a lens through which students explore and understand their subjects in relation to global issues and contexts.
The Global Contexts encompass six overarching themes, each designed to broaden students' perspectives and encourage critical thining, inquiry, and reflection. These themes include:
- Identities and relationships: Examining the interconnectedness of individuals, communities, and societies, including cultural diversity, personal identities, and interpersonal relationships.
- Orientation in space and time: Exploring the concpts of time, place, and environment, as well as their influence on human experiences, history, geography, and sustainability.
- Personal and cultural expression: Investigating forms of expression, creativity, language, and communication across different cultural contexts, including literature, arts, media, and languages.
- Scientific and technical innovation: Analyzing the impact of scientific advancements, technology, and innovation on society, economy, and the environment, while considering ethical implications.
- Globalization and sustainability: Understanding the interconnectedness of global systems, such as economics, politics, environment, and social justice, through the exploration of sustainable development goals and practices.
- Fairness and development: Examining issues of equity, justice, human rights, and socio-economic development at local, national, and global levels, while considering strategies for promoting fairness and inclusivity.
Through the integration of these Global Contexts into the curriculum, IB programs aim to foster international-mindedness, empathy, and a sense of responsibility towards addressing global challenges. Students are encouraged to apply their learning within these contexts to real-world situations, developing skills for active participation in a globalized world.
