Principal Assistant Principal
Dear Roscoe R. Nix Community,
Welcome to another exciting school year at Roscoe R. Nix Elementary! It is with great pride and enthusiasm that I extend a warm welcome to all our students, families, and staff as we embark on this journey together.
At Roscoe R. Nix, we are proud to be a small, diverse, and inclusive community serving students from Pre-K to second grade. We also host a special program for autism, which enriches our vibrant school environment. As the home of the Rockets, we live by our motto: “Always a BLAST – Building Lifelong Learners Who Achieve Success Together.”
Being a community school means we are dedicated to coordinating support for our families and fostering a collaborative environment where every voice is valued. As a Title I school, we are committed to narrowing opportunity gaps in literacy and math by upholding high standards for all students and providing the necessary support to help them succeed.
Roscoe R. Nix Elementary School, located in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), has a rich history of serving its community with dedication and excellence. Named in honor of Roscoe R. Nix, a distinguished educator and advocate for civil rights and educational equity, the school reflects his commitment to fostering educational opportunities for all students.
Roscoe R. Nix Elementary is also recognized for its commitment to special education, particularly through its specialized program for students with autism. This program exemplifies the school’s dedication to meeting the individual needs of each student and ensuring that all learners have access to a high-quality education.
This year, we are thrilled to implement the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum. This comprehensive program will enhance our students' literacy development by building background knowledge and providing explicit instruction aligned with the science of reading, including phonics, phonemic awareness, and vocabulary acquisition.
Additionally, we are committed to reviewing and refining our processes and practices to dismantle any barriers and ensure we are an equitable and antiracist community. We are dedicated to creating an environment where all opinions are valued and every student can thrive.
Thank you for being an integral part of the Roscoe R. Nix community. We look forward to a fantastic year ahead, filled with growth, learning, and success.
Warm regards,
Julian Pineda
