Counselor's Corner
Roscoe R. Nix Elementary
School Counselor
Mrs. Jennifer Jurgrau
I am honored to be the school counselor at Roscoe R. Nix Elementary School. I love our community, parents and students! As your school counselor, my role is to teach, support, guide and develop social emotional skills and well-being in all of our students and families. Classroom guidance lessons, small lunch groups and school wide initiatives are just some ways we promote that important learning.
You can reach me at 240-740-6550 or Jennifer_P_Jurgrau@mcpsmd.org. Your children may know me more commonly as "Mrs. J."
Ms Shameca Green will be with us as our Student Support Teacher. Ms Green and I work together to ensure all of our students are getting the support they need. We work together to meet the social emotional needs of our students and our staff! Ms. Green is available Monday through Thursday.

Below are some of our schoolwide initiatives and events that we would like you to be aware of-
Mindfulness
One of our school wide focuses is on Mindfulness. Mindfulness is paying attention to what is happening in the present moment. It can help us regulate our emotions so we can make good choices in our behavior. Students are taught specific Mindfulness lessons and practice the skills they learn on a daily basis. We have a Mindfulness Minute each morning to further enhance the skills we are learning.
Roscoe R. Nix Elementary students follow our 3 school rules
- Be Respectful
- Be Responsible
- Be Safe.
We model for the students what that behavior looks like in different areas of our building.
Personal Body Safety Lessons
MCPS has a mandated curriculum on Personal Body Safety for all students. The lessons are age appropriate and are taught by myself, in conjunction with the classroom teacher. The purpose is to take an active role in the prevention of child abuse/neglect through early prevention and intervention. For more information, please click here

Meeting with the Counselor
Administration, teachers and parents can refer a student to me. Students themselves can request to meet with me. I may meet a student individually, in a lunch bunch with friends or in a small counseling group. I implement different counseling groups throughout the year and you will receive a permission slip if your child is invited to be a part of the group! They are held during lunch/recess time for six meetings. Some of the topics may include Social skills, Banana Split group ( children of divorce), grief group or Superhero group ( motivation).
Attendance
Regular, consistent attendance, even in elementary school, is an important factor in academic success and future high school graduation. We love having our Rockets in school every day, unless they are sick. Our students are Attendance Super Heroes and even received a visit from Spiderman and the Black Panther to support regular school attendance. Please support our schoolwide initiative of regular attendance every day!
