Backpacking on the Appalachian Trail
Global students can participate in an 2 day, one night backpacking trip along the Appalachian Trail as it winds its way through the Virginia countryside. They spend the night at Blackburn Cabin as guests of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. Students learn about the history of the Appalachian Trail and become familar with its vital role as a wildlife corridor for much of the East Coast and a recreational delight for thousands of hikers and backpackers each year. Local land use issues are explored from the ridge as well as the natural history of the flora and fauna along the trail. Backpacking and hiking skills are taught along with "Leave No Trace" principles, which are reinforced throughout the two days. Often times we have a chance to exchange stories with "through-hikers" who are passing through on their way north to Mt. Kautodin in Maine.
