Pirates of Carl Sandburg

In Art, the Intermediate classes (Mrs. Diehl,  Mr. Meteer,  Ms. Grasso, and Ms. Aston) began a unit about pirates by creating paper mache masks focusing on facial expression- happy, sad, scary, nice, mean, frightening, etc.  They used half of a one gallon milk jug as an armature, taping recycled materials to it to exaggerate facial features.

To begin to create a story line for a pirate video, we talked about pirates that were characters in stories or part of history.  Students wrote down one or two questions that they had about pirates.  The questions served as a format that we used to create the movie.  We used books and internet material to research pirates in history and literature to find out what pirates did on a pirate ship, what they typically ate, how they entertained themselves, etc.  Students worked in groups to create the scenery and props.  Dressing as pirates, students reenacted various aspects of a pirate's life.
