Sherwood ES 2023-24 Entry Plan

Principal Jefferson

Dear Sherwood Families,

For the past twenty years, I have served and led in a variety of capacities in Montgomery County Public Schools, starting my professional career as a middle school science teacher.  I spent seven years as an assistant school administrator, assistant principal, and principal intern at Westland Middle School, and acting

principal at North Chevy Chase Elementary School before starting as Principal of Sherwood Elementary School in April of 2023.

As a classroom teacher, I earned national board certification in early adolescent science and have worked in the role of classroom teacher, grade level team leader, department chair, and county-wide instructional specialist for science, technology, and engineering.

I am originally from Buffalo, New York and moved into the area in 2004 to attend graduate school at American University in Washington, DC.

I look forward to continuing collaboration  with families and the community as we support a healthy, safe, and nurturing learning environment.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at Jason_A_Jefferson@mcpsmd.org.

Assistant Principal Vaughn Smith

Hello Sherwood Families!

I am so excited to be your assistant principal! Here is a little information about who I am. I grew up in Maryland and went to Howard County Public Schools for my entire K-12 schooling. I graduated from Long Reach High School in Columbia and went on to graduate from Towson University with Latin Honors from their Elementary Education program (2008). I later returned to Towson University for my Masters in Reading Education, Reading Specialist certification (2015). I have an Admin certification from Loyola University.

I began my teaching career where my schooling began, in Howard County. I taught 3rd and 4th grades for seven years, before serving as a Reading Specialist for 5 years.  This is my fifth year with Montgomery County Public Schools and my fifth year as an Assistant Principal.

Building relationships and setting clear, high expectations, I believe, is the foundation to providing an equitable education for all of our students.

As Assistant Principal, I have facilitated programs here at the school whose aim is to address the social emotional wellbeing of our students. I serve as a coordinator for students who are in need of Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention, and I am the Gifted and Talented Program Liaison. I look forward to continuing to work with our PTA and other community partners to make Sherwood ES a place where all children feel included and have a sense of belonging.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, feel free to reach out to me, and I thank you for entrusting us with your most valuable asset everyday.

 Sincerely,

Matthew Vaughn-Smith ("Mr. V-S")
Assistant Principal
