Spring International Middle School will be holding a Summer Activities Program this summer. We will have a variety of classes being offered summer including Theater, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), Mathletics, Reading, ESOL, and Social Skills. Letters and registration forms will be mailed home to all current 6th and 7th graders next week (week of May 13th).


Ø Description of Summer Classes (rising 6th, 7th, & 8th graders):

·         Theater: Students will build foundational theater skills by participating in a variety of ensemble-building activities, improvisation exercises, and scripted scenes, in order to improve their communication, confidence, and stage presence.

·         Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM): Students will engage in a variety of STEM related instructional activities including a week of a stream study of Sligo Creek, a week of engineering, and a week of chemistry.

·         Mathletics: Students will be provided instructional support and/or enrichment for real world application of mathematical concepts.

·         Reading: Students will develop their reading skills through games, videos, reader’s theater, technology, and cooperative work. Activities and lessons will focus on improving student’s comprehension skills by working on inferencing, main idea, theme, vocabulary and more! 

·         ESOL Support: Students who speak English as a second language will be provided with additional instruction in the four key language domains (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). They will take a look at current events, new vocabulary, and fictional stories in order to improve their language skills. Students will also be given the opportunity to use their new language in creative ways through presentations and various projects. The class will be taught by a certified ESOL teacher.

·         Social Skills: Students will develop their social skills and coping skills through games, community circles, movement activities, mindfulness exercises and cooperative work. Activities and lessons will focus on risk -taking, conversational skills, coping with anxiety; developing compassion for self and others; and more! This class will be taught by an Autism Resource Services teacher. It is open to all grade levels as well as students who attended the class last summer.


Ø Important Details about Summer School:

·         All of the classes will run for 3 weeks, July 8-July 26.

·         Classes will be held from 8am -12pm.   

·         Students will be provided with breakfast and lunch.

·         Classes are being held at Silver Spring International Middle School.

·         Transportation will be provided for students.
