Service Learning

Service as action, or service learning, is at the heart of an IB World School. Service helps develop caring global citizens who make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the environments of their school and their local and global community

Service learning engages students in opportunities for students to explore, design, implement, and reflect on their efforts to positively impact their local environment. Through service experiences, students learn the value of community participation and gain a deeper understanding of the issues facing their immediate surroundings.

Our students consistently demonstrate among the highest levels of service engagement in the county. They engage in service learning through:

  • Service projects embedded into sixth grade science, seventh grade English, and eighth grade history courses
  • At least four schoolwide school-hosted service opportunities offered during the school day each year
  • Multiple school-hosted service opportunities offered through extracurricular activities
  • Personal and community projects through the Montgomery County Public Schools Student Service Learning (SSL) offerings
