Beginning of 2nd Semester: Monday, January 29

Tomorrow, Monday, January 29, is the first day of the second semester.  All students will report to their homerooms promptly at 7:45 am tomorrow morning to pick up new schedules.


PSAT Score Interpretation Night: Tuesday, January 30

Northwest is holding a PSAT Score Interpretation Night this Tuesday, January 30, at 7:00 pm in the auditorium. This event is for parents of current 10th and 11th graders who participated in the PSAT in October.  Students and parents can access their PSAT scores online, but are also invited to attend this event to pick up hard copies of their score reports and receive information about how to interpret PSAT scores. If parents do not attend this evening meeting, the students will receive their score reports in their homerooms in early February.  


Booster Club Meeting: Wednesday, January 31

Our Booster Club is meeting this Wednesday, January 31, at 7:00 pm in the media center.  All parents are invited to attend. 


PTSA Meeting on Dangers of Alcohol and Drug Use: Thursday, February 1

Through a partnership with several county agencies called “Speak Up - Save a Life,” all students participated in grade-level assemblies in late September.  Students heard from an attorney, a police officer, and other individuals about the dangers of alcohol and drug use, as well as information about the Maryland Good Samaritan Law.  Now all parents have the opportunity to hear the same information at a PTSA meeting this Thursday, February 1, at 7:00 pm in the media center.  All parents are strongly encouraged to attend.


Northwest’s Got Talent: Friday, February 2

Our drama program is sponsoring Northwest’s Got Talent this Friday, February 2, at 6:30 pm in the auditorium.  Tickets are $5 each, and all members of the community are invited to see this showcase of student talent!


Senior Class Panera Fundraiser: Monday, January 29

Tomorrow, Monday, January 29, the senior class is sponsoring a fundraiser at Panera by the Germantown Transit Center from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  All you have to do is mention Northwest to the cashier, and the senior class will receive a percentage of the sale!


11th Grade College/Career Readiness & Post-Secondary Planning: Wednesday, February 7

Attention parents of current juniors: On Wednesday, February 7, at 7:00 pm in the auditorium, we are hosting our “College/Career Readiness & Post-Secondary Planning Program” for 11th grade students and their parents to help in navigating the college and post-secondary planning process.  In particular, counselors will review application timelines, college test prep options, how to begin the college search and track applications with Family Connection, and much more! 

In addition, juniors and their parents interested in the Montgomery College Dual Enrollment Program are invited to a dual enrollment information session at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, February 7, in the auditorium.


Saturday School Support for AP Science Classes

Ms. Ellen Polster, one of our AP science teachers, is offering AP science support on Saturday mornings through the George B. Thomas, Sr. Saturday School Program at Northwest High School.  This is designed for any student currently taking an AP science course.  The program is on Saturday mornings from 8:30 am to 11:00 am, beginning this Saturday, February 3, and continuing through Saturday, May 5.  The cost is $70 for the entire semester, with a $40 reduced fee available if a student receives free or reduced-price meals.  To register, please visit, or simply come with your student to the Northwest auditorium next Saturday, February 3, at 8:30 am.

Parking Permits

All students who wish to park on campus this semester must have valid parking permits.  Parking permits cost $37.50 for the spring semester.  The parking permit application is available in the Northwest Business Office or by clicking here:  Please note that students are not allowed to park in the neighborhoods across the street from the school.


Historically Black Colleges & Universities College Fair: February, February 9

The 10th annual MCPS Historically Black Colleges & Universities College Fair is Friday, February 9, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Einstein High School in Kensington.  While the event is open for students in grades 8-12 and their parents, there will be opportunities for on-site interviews, admissions and scholarships for current seniors.  Seniors who would like to schedule on-site interviews must register by this Wednesday, January 31.  For more information, and to register for on-site interviews, please visit


AP Exam Registration: Deadline is Friday, February 16

Before Winter Break, all students registered for their AP exams through their respective AP courses.  Registration was completed online, and a parent/guardian will need to pay for the exams through the online system. Exams are $94 each, and payment can be made with a credit or debit card. Payment plans are available, with a minimum payment of $25. The deadline to pay is Friday, February 16.  All students taking AP courses are expected to register for the corresponding AP exams. Free SAT for All Juniors: Wednesday, March 7

As part of the Fiscal Year 2018 Operating Budget, MCPS has allocated funding for students to take the SAT during the school day free of charge.  At Northwest, all 11th grade students will be automatically registered to take the SAT on Wednesday, March 7.  More details will be shared in February about this excellent opportunity.
