My name is Amber Lindholm and I am the school counselor. If you need to contact me, you can email me at Amber_J_Lindholm@mcpsmd.org or call me at 301-571-6949. I look forward to working with you and your children.

Counseling Office

Individual short-term Counseling: One-on-one counseling support is available to all students in grades K to 5. This support is intended to address specific emotional, behavioral or social concerns that a particular child may have. Students may self-refer or be referred by teachers and/or parents. Confidentiality is respected.

Group Counseling: Group counseling is provided for small groups of students experiencing similar concerns.  These may include making and keeping friends, anger management, coping with separation/divorce and or loss, getting organized/study skills and/or improving self-esteem. The groups generally range from 4 to 6 students and last for 6 to 8 sessions. The students for groups can be recommended by parents/guardians or by staff members. Permission slips must be signed by parents for students to participate in groups.

Classroom Guidance Lessons: There will four lessons in the fall and four lessons in the spring in each class.  Some example topics include: conflict resolution, social skills, character education, friendship, and bullying prevention. Additional lessons will be available to address specific classroom needs.

Lunch Buddies: Students get to eat with the counselor and have an opportunity to discuss any issues they may be having or to help them make and keep friends.

Consultations: I am available to meet with teachers, administrators and/or parents to discuss the needs of individual students. I am here for all students and want to ensure that your child has a productive and positive school year. If I can support your child in anyway, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

In addition to class lessons and counseling options, I serve as the coordinator for the following programs: Peer Mediation, Student Council, and 504 plans.

Mission

The mission of the counseling program at Kensington Parkwood Elementary encourages all students to achieve success through a comprehensive, developmentally appropriate program that focuses on academic, personal, social and career development. This is achieved through the delivery of guidance lessons and counseling activities, as well as through a collaborative effort between the home, school and community.
