Unit 3 is typically a six-week unit taught in January and February.
Students should explore a variety of strategies using place value and grouping prior to using standard algorithms for adding and subtracting. When students use a variety of computation strategies they develop an understanding of the operations and how they are related. Understanding place value and flexible grouping of numbers helps students develop skill in computing with numbers.
In Grade 1, students used concrete materials to solve addition and subtraction problems. In Grade 2, students add and subtract two- and three-digit numbers using various methods. They construct and compare the accuracy and efficiency of the strategies and make sense of their calculations. Students solve addition and subtraction problems and write number sentences to represent the relationships in the problems.
