Unit 4 is typically a seven-week unit taught in February and March.
Fractions express a relationship between a part and a whole. Fractional parts are equal shares of one whole or equal-sized parts of a set. In Grade 1, the concept that a fraction represents part of a whole was developed. Students represented ½ and ¼ in pictures and symbolic notation. In Grade 2, students model, read, and write numerals that represent common fractions. Both the region model and the set model are used. In Grade 3, students will explore the length model and identify fractions that represent the same amount.
Measurement is a comparison of a measured item with a unit having the same attribute. During instruction students become familiar with measurement units to make meaningful measurements and estimations. In Grade 2, students estimate and measure in customary and metric units. They measure length, weight, temperature, area, time, and capacity using standard and non-standard units.
