Fiscal Year 2017 Operating Budget
Board of Education Approves $2.46 Billion Operating Budget for Fiscal Year 2017
The Montgomery County Board of Education on Tuesday, June 14, unanimously approved a final $2.457 billion Operating Budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2017. The budget is a $139 million (6.0 percent) increase over FY 2016 and provides $37.9 million of targeted funding that will allow MCPS to reduce class sizes in many classrooms across the district and accelerate our efforts to close the achievement gap. The approved budget marks the first time since 2009 MCPS has been funded above the minimum level required by state law, called Maintenance of Effort (MOE).More

Investing to Reduce Class Size and Close the Achievement Gap
The Montgomery County Council has approved the Montgomery County Public Schools operating budget for next year. The budget provides $37.9 million of additional funding that will allow us to reduce class sizes in many classrooms across the district and accelerate our efforts to close the achievement gap. We are grateful that the Council has provided these additional resources that will allow us to accomplish this important work. We also recognize that with these resources comes responsibility—responsibility to ensure that student achievement increases and every dollar is used wisely.
County Council Approves $2.46 Billion MCPS Operating Budget
The Montgomery County Council approved a FY17 budget for MCPS of $2.46 billion May 26, an increase of $135.9 million (5.9 percent) over the approved FY16 level. The County contribution is $1.62 billion, $89.3 million above the State’s Maintenance of Effort funding level.
Board of Education Adopts $2.5B FY 2017 Operating Budget
The Montgomery County Board of Education approved a $2.5 billion Operating Budget request for Fiscal Year (FY) 2017, which includes targeted investments to close the achievement gap; improve students’ literacy and math skills; reduce class sizes; foster stronger partnerships with the community and families to support students; and accelerate efforts to improve and diversify the workforce. The budget represents a $180.2 million increase over the current year’s budget.

MCPS is hosting three Budget 101 Parent Academy workshops where you can learn more about the current budget and discuss the proposed budget for next school year. The workshops are scheduled for January 20 at Francis Scott Key Middle School; February 17 at the Carver Educational Services Center; and March 7 at Forest Oak Middle School.
