The Montgomery County Council has approved the Montgomery County Public Schools operating budget for next year. The budget provides $37.9 million of additional funding that will allow us to reduce class sizes in many classrooms across the district and accelerate our efforts to close the achievement gap. We are grateful that the Council has provided these additional resources that will allow us to accomplish this important work. We also recognize that with these resources comes responsibility—responsibility to ensure that student achievement increases and every dollar is used wisely.
The Montgomery County Council approved a FY17 budget for MCPS of $2.46 billion May 26, an increase of $135.9 million (5.9 percent) over the approved FY16 level. The County contribution is $1.62 billion, $89.3 million above the State’s Maintenance of Effort funding level.
The Montgomery County Board of Education approved a $2.5 billion Operating Budget request for Fiscal Year (FY) 2017, which includes targeted investments to close the achievement gap; improve students’ literacy and math skills; reduce class sizes; foster stronger partnerships with the community and families to support students; and accelerate efforts to improve and diversify the workforce.
