Social Emotional Special Education Services
We foster the social, emotional and academic growth within our students, which enables them , to the best of their abilities, to be socially well-adjusted and productive members of their communities and society.
What We Do
Social emotional special education services are developed and implementer throughout MCPS for students are experiencing social, emotional and behavioral challenges which interfere with their learning and access to the general education curriculum. Through the use of the interdisciplinary team , we empower students to reach academic and social successes within the least restrictive environment.

What is Social Emotional Special Education Services?
In an effort to provide comprehensive services to students experiencing significant emotional and/or behavioral difficulties, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has established these services to meet the needs of students in Grades K–12 who are experiencing emotional and behavioral difficulties in school. By identifying developmentally appropriate learning strategies and interventions based on current research, staff addresses each individual’s needs in the least restrictive environment (LRE).
Can someone come out & observe my child?
Observations of individual students can be requested through your child’s special education team.
What Social Emotional Special Education Service School will my child attend?
Students are assigned to the closest school that can provide the appropriate Social Emotional Special Education Services. Please contact the Office for Social Emotional Special Education Services at (240) 740-3250 to determine which school your student would be assigned to.
We are moving to a different address in Montgomery County. My student is receiving Social Emotional Special Education Services. What school will he/she attend once we have moved?

Why was my child placed in a school with Social Emotional Special Education Services if they are not coded as a student with an emotional disability?
Students are placed based on the services and supports that they need as identified on their Individualized Education Program (IEP). The educational disability code itself does not determine placement.
