The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is more than an honor roll celebration. It is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a student. Membership is based on five criteria (pillars): citizenship, service, leadership, scholarship and character. Each year, students are elected by a Faculty Council to be inducted into the NJHS. In order to be considered for membership in the NJHS, candidates must meet the cumulative GPA requirement of a 3.5 or higher.

To complete the application process your child must complete a student activity form and write an essay of self-recommendation stating what qualities and contributions he/she would bring to the National Junior Honor Society. This will provide the Faculty Council with information regarding the candidate’s scholarship, citizenship, service, leadership, and character. All selection deliberations by the Faculty Council are kept confidential.

Candidates will be notified by letter regarding selection. A formal induction ceremony will be held at the school to recognize all the newly selected members. Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all five criteria that led to their selection.

Membership is both an honor and responsibility to demonstrate the outstanding qualities that resulted in the candidate’s selection.  Inductees will be required to participate in a service project the following year as part of their commitment to the five pillars and membership in the NJHS. In addition, inductees shall individually volunteer for one service activity each quarter.

The selection criterion for the National Junior Honor Society is based upon the pillars of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Citizenship, and Character.  Students in the seventh and eighth grades are provided information about the selection process if they fulfill the cumulative GPA requirement of a 3.5 or better. Once invited to apply, it is the student’s responsibility to complete the following in order to be considered by the Faculty Council for this honor:

  • Student Activity Form
  • Teacher Recommendation Form
  • Self-Recommendation Essay

The Council will make its selections based on the completed applications received, and a formal induction ceremony will take place.  The following indicators of the five pillars serve as a framework for selection rather than a checklist of items that must be fulfilled.

I. Scholarship

  • A cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
    • For current seventh grade students, a cumulative grade point average from sixth grade and the first semester of seventh grade is required.
    • For current eighth grade students, it shall be based upon the cumulative grade point average from seventh grade and the first semester of eighth grade.

II. Leadership

  • Successfully holding school offices or positions of responsibility.
  • Leading in the classroom and in other school or community activities.

III. Service

  • Participating in service or charitable activities outside of school.
  • Mentoring people in the community or students at other schools.
  • Helping with any request made by staff to help support our school community.
  • Earned at least
    • 7th Graders: 20 Student Service Learning (SSL) hours.
    • 8th Graders: 40 SSL hours.
    • If service hours have been completed with an outside agency and not recorded through SSL, students may submit an original letter from the agency attesting to the number of hours worked.  The letter must be on the organization’s letterhead, and a contact name and phone number must be provided.

IV. Citizenship

  • Understanding the importance of civic involvement.
  • Having a high regard for freedom, justice, and democracy.
  • Involvement with activities such as scouting, community organizations,

and school clubs.

V. Character

  • Upholding our core values of respect, responsibility, and integrity.
  • Complying with school rules (no written referrals).
