October 11, 2010:   National Coming Out Day 

The purpose is to promote government and public awareness of gay, bisexual, lesbian and transgender rights. Also it is to encourage the LGBT community to "come out" to family, friends, classmates and coworkers, if you feel safe doing so, in order to be achieve equal rights.  Check out the Powerpoint students created in 2007. October 20, 2010 Spirit Day: 

Students wore a purple ribbons for and discussed "It Gets Better" Campaign about recent GLBT youth suicides. 

November 20, 2010:  International Transgender Day of Remembrance
This is a day to reflect on prejudice and violence perpetrated upon people for how they look (or don't look).  Usually on this day, our club has an "open mike".

EVENTS IN 2011

(TBA) April ?? 2011:  National Day of Silence

Brief History:  Founded by students in 1996, the first protest was led at the University of Virginia.  The Day of Silence has become the largest single student-led action towards creating safer schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

      *The Rainbow Youth Alliance meets in Rockville (talk to a GSA member or sponsor to get information).

      *SMYAL is located in Washington DC near Eastern Market Metro. (Speakers from SMYAL came and presented to our club about "Coming Out" and online dating October 14th.  It was phenomenal.)
