Comprehensive Health Education

All Wood students are scheduled to take the MCPS Comprehensive Health Education unit for one nine-week marking period. The middle school Health curriculum focuses on helping students develop and enhance personal responsibility and health-related skills. The development of communication, decision-making and goal setting skills that are included in health education are essential for this age group. The curriculum on comprehensive Health Education includes content in the following areas: mental and emotional health; tobacco, alcohol and other drugs; personal and consumer health; nutrition and fitness; safety, first aid and injury prevention; family life and human sexuality; and disease prevention and control. Instruction in these units is designed to help students develop a foundation for making responsible choices of behavior that will reflect respect for the individual and for others in the family and community. Students are expected to learn the material presented and will receive a separate grade for health education on the report card. If you would like more information about the Health Education curriculum, you are invited to attend a meeting at the school on Thursday, September 27, 2007 at 6:30pm. Instructional materials will be reviewed and you will have an opportunity to discuss the curriculum with the teachers.
