We Are The Champions- It’s Academic

The James Hubert Blake It’s Academic Team won the Washington-area Metro Championship Saturday on It’s Academic in come-from–behind fashion over Montgomery Blair and Holton Arms. The final score was Blake 555, Blair 485, Holton Arms 400.

Junior starter John Beers and sophomore starter Mary Aronne were magnificent, but the team was powered by senior captain Lucas Irvin, who played with the heart of a champion. The team was in third place at halftime, having going just 2-2 in the two initial rounds for a net total score of zero on competitive buzz-in questions to that point (in their two previous playoff games, they were 11-1 and 12-1 at this point in the game). After halftime, the team answered all eight question in the packet round but were still in third place, still without any semblance of rhythm in the competitive rounds against two exceptional opponents. Then came the final grab bag round—with what turned out to be 19 questions. Blake got off to a very fast start and took the lead almost immediately—breaking the finals open and finishing the game with an 8-0 run with the game on the line as Blair went 4-1 and Holton Arms went 4-2.

In the inter-city Regional Super Bowl Championship game directly afterward, Blake led wire to wire against Baltimore champion Catonsville and Central Virginia Champion Louisa County. The final score was Blake 630, Catonsville 385, Louisa County 280.

Over his three-year career, Lucas finished 10-2 as a TV starter and ties the school record for most appearances on It’s Academic (with Isaac Hirsch, 2010) while establishing the school record for most wins by one player. John and Mary return next year as starters on Blake’s defending It’s Academic championship team.

The team was prepared by English teacher Joseph Caulfield, the first-ever recipient of the Sophie Altman It’s Academic Coach of the Year Award in 2009, and journalism teacher Kevin Keegan.

Our players and coaches wish to thank principal Chris Berry, who was in attendance and our biggest cheerleader for both games Saturday. As many of you know, Chris was a starter on his Lansdowne High School It’s Academic team in the early 1980s.

Photos to follow.

Here are the airing dates for Blake’s playoff games on WRC-TV Channel 4:

Saturday, May 19: quarterfinals vs. Sherwood and DeMatha, 10:30am
Saturday, June 16: semifinals vs. Georgetown Day and Langley
Saturday, June 23: finals vs. Montgomery Blair and Holton Arms
Saturday, June 23: Super Bowl vs. Catonsville and Louisa County

Blake's It's Academic Goes to Finals

The Blake It’s Academic team led Saturday from wire to wire and defeated Georgetown Day and Langley to advance to the DC Metro Championship this Saturday at 11am in the WRC-TV studios. The final score was Blake 755, GDS 585, and Langley 465 in a game that will air on Channel 4 June 16 at 10:30am.

This is the highest point total for a semifinal game in Blake history.

No tickets are need to be in the live studio audience, so plan now to be there as the Bengals take on Montgomery Blair and Holton Arms in a rematch of the 2009 It’s Academic title game.

Congratulations to senior Lucas Irvin, junior starter John Beers, and sophomore starter Mary Aronne.

Blake’s quarterfinal win over Sherwood and DeMatha will air on May 19 at 10:30am

James Hubert Blake High School Senior Rhea Wyse has been named a recipient of the Morehead-Cain Scholarship, which provides full funding to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Blake High School Principal Christopher Berry said, “Rhea has excelled in her four years at Blake both inside the classroom and out. New Attendance Procedures - Revised

Student attendance in all classes is critically important to maximize student learning, attain good grades, and earn credits in high school.  Due to inconsistencies in the implementation of attendance procedures and resulting inequities among students across Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) high schools, the loss of credit procedures were eliminated during the 2010–2011 school year.  However, it was found that the elimination of these procedures during this past school year resulted in an unprecedented number of students being either late to class or not attending class, particularly seniors in their second semester.

As a result of these findings, a team consisting of high school principals and other MCPS staff members worked to create a plan for the 2011–2012 school year to address these issues.  The following procedures will be implemented at all high schools for this upcoming school year and are designed to bring consistency to addressing student attendance issues and to reinforce the expectations that class attendance is critical to student learning.
