ESOL - Mrs. Kanderian, Mrs. Khalilian and Mrs. Gardner

The goal of the ESOL program is to help the English Language Learners to learn enough English to function linguistically and culturally in the Montgomery County Public Schools and in the mainstream of American society.  NMS will provide high quality instruction, assessment, counseling, and parent outreach activities that enable English language learners to demonstrate successful academic performance across all curricular areas.

METS - Ms. Kanderian

The METS program of the Montgomery County Public Schools is designed to meet the linguistic and academic needs of ELL students who have had interrupted, disrupted or no previous schooling. The approach used in this program combines English language development, learning strategies and sheltered instruction in the basic skills of reading, math, and social studies.

Level I - Mrs. Kanderian

Students in ESOL 1 learn and develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills during four thematic units, “All About Me,” “The World Around Me,” “Welcome to America,” and “Reflections”. Students learn to write simple and compound sentences with a limited range of academic vocabulary, write questions in the present and past tenses, use simple grammatical structures, limited transitions and some writing conventions. They learn to use some figurative language and give short oral presentations using standard pronunciation.  Students in ESOL 1 get a double period of ESOL, and the Academic Language Class.

Level II - Mrs. Khalilian

In ESOL II students learn to improve their reading skills such as fluency, and comprehension.  They also learn to write more complex grammar skills and sentence structures, while learning to use compound sentences in their oral language communications. Level II students have an ESOL reading class; many of them have been scheduled to take the Read 180 course this year.

Level III - Mrs. Khalilian

ESOL Level Three is the advanced level ESOL class.  Students work to improve and master their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, at a more rigorous pace in order to become completely fluent in their language acquisition.  Level III students also have an ESOL reading class in addition to their ESOL class.

Academic Language Course - Mrs. Gardner

The Academic Language course exposes Neelsville Middle School ESOL  newcomer students to the challenging academic language commonly used in a variety of content subject areas. The primary focus of the course, however, is not to teach content, but to instruct students how to successfully communicate and use language when in content classes. Throughout the year, students will expand their academic language skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening through the following content areas: math, science, and social studies.

ESOL Reading Course - Mrs. Gardner

The ESOL Reading course emphasizes strengthening existing reading skills and extending use of reading strategies.  Focus is on vocabulary building in the content areas, as well as comprehension of material read.  Instruction is provided to help students become independent, life-long readers.
