An important figure in the celebration of Asian/Pacific Heritage month was Fred Korematsu. He was a civil rights activist that fought against Japanese Relocation (Prison) Camps during WWII. His first stand was in 1942, at the age of 23, when he refused to be sent to the camp he was assigned. Eventually, he took his case to the Supreme Court where he was ruled against because of “necessary military precautions.” However, he kept fighting and in 1998 he won the highest Medal of Honor for civilians: The Presidential Award of Freedom. Fred Korematsu died on March 30, 2005, but his legacy of justice and equality still stays with us to this day.
