Passwords

Passwords for databases can be picked up at the Media Center. They can also be found on this Google Doc   

 You must be logged into your MCPS Google account to access it.     

General Reference Databases   

  • Britannica School Edition: An encyclopedia where you can search for articles on a variety of topics.    
  • Explora: Explora includes  current events, primary source documents, and film and video from books, encyclopedias, newspapers, magazines and government reports.
  • SIRS Discoverer: SIRS Discoverer is a database of articles and images from newspapers, magazines, government documents, and websites.  
  • SIRS Knowledge Source: SIRS Knowledge Source has several databases to help middle and high school students with research on current issues, government topics, arts and history. 
  • World Book Online: The complete World Book encyclopedia plus multimedia, web links, and periodicals.

World Studies Databases 

  • Ancient and Medieval History: Ancient and Medieval History is an e-learning module that provides videos, text and images -- of world history from pre-history through 1500s.
  • Britannica Annals of American History: Speeches, historical accounts, memoirs, poems, images, and multimedia  
  • Early Peoples: Digital library that focuses on Ancient civilizations 
  • FactCiteFactcite includes articles of people, places and events that shape our society and world around us. Included are the following databases: American History, Countries and Cultures, Defining Moments in US History, Shapers of Society, Sports Champions, and World Biography.
  • Gale U.S. History in ContextUS History in Context is a collection of primary and secondary resources to support the study of United States history, issues and current information.    
  • Rosen Interactive eBooks: Interactive eBooks about Ancient Egypt and Ancient China 
  • World Data Analyst: World Data Analyst is a database in which you can create "current comparisons" of countries based on a large list of data points, including "chronological comparisons," which compares changes over time.       
  • World News Digest: Authoritative World News Coverage from 1940 through Today: Provides Information, Context, and Perspective

  • EBSCO Science Reference Center : Science Reference center Includes science periodicals, reference books, encyclopedias, essays, biographies, animations, images and videos.
  • Inventions and Discoveries: Digital library that focuses on inventions and discoveries in the arts, medicine, warfare, architecture & engineering, communication, astronomy, industry, mathematics, transportation and medicine. 
  • Living Green: Digital library that focuses on environmental science.
  • ScienceFlix: Scienceflix includes videos, articles, images, and  eBooks on a variety of science topics.

World Languages Databases

  • Escolar Online:Britannica School encyclopedia in Spanish. Find articles on a variety of topics written in Spanish.
  • Enciclopedia ModernaSpanish language encyclopedia that has many articles plus timelines, an atlas, and a dictionary.
  • Britannica Online Japan: Britannica Online Japan is an essential resource for conducting thorough research for both native Japanese speakers.
  • Encyclopaedia Universalis: Valuable resource for all French language students.
  • Universalis Junior Online: Created in collaboration with American and French education experts, provides a fresh look at a wide array of topics such as history, geography, science, and technology 
  • Culture GramsCulturegrams has information on 182 countries and cultures, including  history, land and climate, religion, personal appearance, gestures, language, government, and family life.

  • Kids.gov: U.S. government's digital portal for students.
  • Library of Congress: Digital portal to a world class library.
  • Science Buddies: Amazing database of science projects, real-world science, and inspiration.
  • Sweet Search: Search engine for students. Quality search results without all the noise from Google. 
  • Wolfram Alpha : Search engine for students. Access to the world's facts and data and calculates answers across a range of topics.

Classroom Videos   

  • BrainPop: A group of educational websites with short animated movies for students covering the subjects of science, social studies, English, mathematics, arts and music, health and technology. 
  • Flocabulary: Online library of educational hip hop songs and videos for grades K-12.
