Laura Stewart is a dedicated advocate for students and families, with a deep commitment to improving education and ensuring every child has the opportunity to succeed. Elected to her first term on the Montgomery County Board of Education in 2024, Ms. Stewart brings over a decade of experience working on various educational boards and committees.
As a mother, Ms. Stewart is passionate about creating a just world for future generations, drawing inspiration from her upbringing and the values of Tikkun Olam—the responsibility to repair and improve the world. Her long history of involvement with the PTA and other education-related organizations has given her a profound understanding of the challenges facing our schools. She believes that by strengthening the Board of Education’s role, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) can better prepare students for the future and support their growth and potential.
In addition to her role as a Board member, Ms. Stewart has served in many leadership positions within the educational community, including as President of the Woodlin Elementary School PTA, MCCPTA Einstein Cluster Coordinator, and VP of Advocacy for MCCPTA. She has also been involved with statewide education initiatives as VP for Advocacy with the Free State PTA and as a Policy Co-chair for the Maryland Education Coalition. Laura is a founding member of the Coalition for Inclusive Schools and Communities, which advocates for equitable educational opportunities for all students.
Outside of her service to education, Ms. Stewart is actively engaged in several community organizations, including as Vice President of Communities United Against Hate and a board member of Safe Healthy Playing Field, Inc. She has also served as the Past President of the Women’s Democratic Club and District 18 Democratic Precinct Chair.
Ms. Stewart is a proud mom to two MCPS graduates, including one who went on to earn a degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Maryland. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, listening to her husband play Beatles guitar licks, exploring healthy cooking, and occasionally ice skating or skiing.
Ms. Stewart is excited to continue working alongside the school board, students, and families to ensure that all students in MCPS have the resources and support they need to thrive.
